Adi Nes belongs to the generation of artists who came of age during the 1990s. The works of some of these artists are characterized by a post-Zionist stance that involves the deconstruction of Israeli cultural myths and “sacred cows,” such as issues related to the Israeli army, as well as an examination of questions concerning gender identity. Nes’ work has a highly theatrically quality, and includes direct references to a range of art-historical masterpieces. Nes plans and constructs each of his photographs like a film director, attempting to capture a single moment that encapsulates an entire story in images suspended between static poses and a sense of movement. By infusing classical compositions with the intensity of cinematic images, his photographs critically examine a range of contemporary concerns.
