In the contemporary Western world, with the weakening of institutionalized religious hegemony, rituals seem to be pushed out of everyday life. Nine artists – three of them international, and six Israeli artists working in Israel and around the world – each examines in his or her own way aspects of the ongoing presence of ceremonies and rituals in the contemporary world. The presentation of rituals and ceremonies in the exhibition span between two poles. From rituals that define a group; those that undergo transformation in order to integrate into a modern world; encounters between two different ceremonial systems that disrupt the reading of each of them; secular and traditional death rites – to the ones opposite, namely the ceremonies that the individual formulate for himself as part of a personal, daily ritual.
