The artist combines an allegedly simple photographic gaze with an in-depth look at intricate interactions with the geographical, cultural, and ideological environment from which she grew up. Beyond the local content, however, Shalem’s work explores the limits of the gaze’s ability to see, on the one hand, and the position of observation, on the other.
