Vestitectura is a sculptural installation comprised of three structures with hybrid architectural characteristics: Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque, as well as allusions to the hoopskirt (worn under women’s skirts to give them a puffier shape, varying in style between the 16th and the 19th centuries). Kaczka is attracted by the tension which exists – in both architecture and fashion – between what is seen from the exterior of a design and what lies inside it. Therefore, interior versus exterior and the deliberate creation of false appearances is one of the important parameters explored by the artist in this work.
Another kind of conflict which preoccupies Kaczka is temporality versus eternity. Sumptuous buildings and outfits are designed to connote power and perpetuity. By contrast, these works, although grand and impressive, are made of cardboard – a humble, cheap and perishable material. We cannot help but marvel at the disparity between the majesty of these sculptural objects and the simple material of which they are made.
