Judges’ reasoning:
Eliezer Sonnenschein is one of the leaders of the new wave of ultimate pop in Israel. In his art he distorts and amplifies objects and images associated with the world of brand names, logos and icons, thus creating a distinctive artistic persona. His work is interlaced with markers of antagonism and piracy, gaining their strength and aggression from the violence of the local political and economic processes. Sonnenschein’s voice is singular: the theatrics of his work tell the story of the individual in his struggle against the system, be it a political, social, economic or linguistic system. His complex visual language is comprised of raw and familiar images, and holds poignant criticism. The distorted, illogical environments he creates are full of playfulness and provoke the viewers to examine themselves in relation to the ruling ideology.
