Generator, 2012-2013, video, 11:15 min.

Margarita Perlin’s work follows a time-honored tradition of roving artists operating outside the studio, with and within the environment they explore. Generator was created in the industrial zones of Haifa and Jerusalem after a prolonged search for suitable action sites. During the two-year creative process, Perlin kept revisiting the filmed locations, found objects nearby and improvised the action so that she herself became on object which initiates and motivates events. In this work, the artist designed compositions which document her various experiences.
Perlin stimulates the environment and produces short and precise scenes of repetitive improvised actions which combine the environmental rustle and bustle with directed sound. She demonstrates power and authority over the space where she acts. Her actions depict the sights of the abandoned environments she roams, giving it voice and seem to breathe new life and color into it.
