Lala Major, 2007, sound installation
The work Lala Major constructs a new audial entity, producing a tonal blend comprising numerous music channels played simultaneously. The work consists exclusively of local pieces, thus striving to “sketch” a local auditory landscape underlain by a jumble and hybridization of styles, including pop, Hassidic music, classical music, electronic music, folklore, punk, rock’n’roll, as well original pieces by Katzenstein and Adar.

The compressed audial information spawns a space which presents music in a manner more reminiscent of our random tonal environment in everyday life. In order to link and cross them, Katzenstein and Adar reworked the various pieces so that they fit together and produced different textures. The listener moves between the twenty-four loudspeakers installed in the space, playing music subordinated to sculptural needs. The “sculptural elements” are assorted musical pieces from the country’s beginnings to the present playing among themselves.
