Shachar deals with decoration that originates in “tastelessness”, templates, and written clichés, and explores graphic representations and manual renderings of digital signs. Some of the objects contain banal texts and images taken from the restaurant context, such as menus, ashtrays and coffee cups, alluding to the café culture and consumerist lifestyle. The works’ outward appearance betrays their processing – stained, imperfect, with clear traces of the artist’s handiwork.
The piece raises questions about the line dividing craft on the one hand, and fine art and design on the other. Its name, Cappuccino for Your Small Talks, taken from a caption on disposable paper cups, sheds light on the marginal, trivial, regular, and vulgar.
